5 Bodybuilding Legends Who Admitted to Using Steroids

Steroids are to Bodybuilders as cocaine is to rock stars. Sure, you can live without it, but it’s just so much more fun when you’re on it.

A lot of bodybuilders have been raising eyebrows with their impressive physiques and have been accused of using the fitness industry’s equivalent of a video game cheat code. It’s almost impossible to find a bodybuilder who hasn’t at least at one point in his career been the subject of the age old debate of “is he natty or not.” To give you an example of what I mean, try this little trick: think of a famous bodybuilder from the last 20-30 years. Got one? Okay, now try googling his name and add the word “steroids” to it. Chances are that you’re now riddled endless amounts of forum debates, articles, and youtube analysis claiming they have the definitive answer to the burning question at hand.

However what you probably won’t see is the said bodybuilder confessing the usage of steroids is the real life equivalent of Captain America’s “Super Soldier” serum.

It’s a big no-no to talk about or even outright admit you use steroids. Because of that, today will we look at the honest men who openly admitted taking the juice. Let’s start things off with a familiar face.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Back in the “Pumping Iron” glory days of bodybuilding, steroids were not as a frowned upon as they are today. In fact, they were pretty much legal and a normal thing to use. You wanted to get the extra edge before the competition? You hit the sauce. Here’s Arnold talking about using them and how it was perceived back then.

Next Bodybuilder is often talked about as one of the strongest ones and has won the prestigious Mr. Olympia title eight times.

Ronnie Coleman

Yeaaaah buddy! Big Ron was quite often suspected as being one of the guys that just had to be taking more than just protein shakes and eating chicken breast.

He was an all around package; he had size, definition, and strength. Even if you don’t recognize Ronnie by name alone, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve seen one of his many lifting feats. Such as leg pressing 2000lbs (no, I didn’t add an extra zero by accident) and dumbbell chest pressing with 200lbs in each hand. Here he talks about asking Flex Wheeler for training advice, and he mentioned some strange vitamins you can’t get at your local pharmacy.

Speaking of Flex Wheeler, he’s also on this list.

Flex Wheeler

Flex Wheeler looked like something straight out of a comic book. Guns blasting, tiny waist and big ass set of wheels to top it off. Truly the physique of greatness. However, such a physique came from frequent steroid usage. A bad childhood and desire to become a beast put him on the road of becoming huge, no matter the cost. Just a quick google search gives you a sad story in full detail about his life and his confessions about using steroids.

The last two men are multiple Mr. Olympia winners and two of the most famous bodybuilders of all time.

Dorian Yates

Dorian needs no introduction — he’s a six-time Mr. Oympia winner and is up there with Arnold in terms of guys who are instantly recognized by his name and his game. He also gives zero f*cks and talks very openly about steroid usage. He’s famously said: “steroids are better than McDonald’s” and talked about how his last run at the Mr. Olympia title win was made possible by steroids, among other things.

Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler has won the Mr. Olympia title four times and has placed in the top 3 and top 5 more times than you can count. He, just like the other four men on this list, was always on people’s radar as a possible steroid user, even though he never outright admitted it.

However, he did talk about the issue of steroid usage in the “Bigger, Stronger, Faster” documentary and he kinda sorta hinted that he does hit the sauce every so often to get that extra edge over his competition.

Truth is, steroids have become an inevitable part of bodybuilding. They’re the sport’s weird cousin that lives in a trailer and no one wants to talk about him. But he’s there, alive and kicking. Will this ever change? Will we ever truly see enhancement-free athletes? Don’t hold your breath waiting for it to happen. There’s only room for one at the top and you can bet your ass these guys are going to take whatever they can get their hands on to be the very best.

  1. I played Div I college football in the early 80’s. I was a 6-5, 215 lb defensive tackle. I lifted weights and got stronger, but could not get the mass and extreme strength of some of the other players. Only one teammate admitted to using steroids. I believe that many others used some steroids to various degrees. I quit because I would never use steroids. I considered it cheating. I pretty much gave up. I transferred to a Div III school. I played football to pay for most of school, but I concentrated on studies and graduated with a BS Physics. Players even used steroids at that program, but I did not suspect as high a percentage. A friend told me “You would not believe how many were using steroids) when I spoke to him about five years after he graduated.

I would be curious about an investigation into the NFL centering on which players use steroids, and what position is the highest percentage use of steroids in order to make an NFL team. I suspect defensive lineman, followed by linebackers as the highest percentage. Maybe offensive linemen are also in there. Maybe some players who know could tell the rest of us.
